Course Outline and Evaluation

The prerequisite for this course is a passing grade in Social 23.

Social Studies is a subject that assists students in acquiring the knowledge, skills and positive attitudes necessary to be responsible citizens. To be both active and informed members of our changing society requires knowledge and the ability to interpret what is going on around us. The study of history, geography, economics and politics plays an indispensable role in becoming a fully functioning member of society.

There are two themes explored in Social Studies 33:


Topic A: Political and Economic Systems (Approximately 10 weeks)
Participating as an effective, responsible citizen involves acquiring basic understanding of major political and economic ideas and an awareness of the differences in the ways societies make decisions. Societies have different values therefore they use varying degrees of freedom and control in their decision making. In Topic A of Social Studies 33, students will study concepts such as:
- democracy and dictatorship
- the political spectrum
- market, command and mixed economies


Topic B: Global Interaction Since WWI (Approximately 10 weeks)
History shapes the world we live in today. Since WWI, nations have become increasingly interdependent while still attempting to protect, maintain and enhance their national interests. Major areas the students will focus on in this section include:
- WWI and WWII
- the Cold War
- the United Nations
- contemporary global events
